Spring is the perfect time to review what's hot and what's not in your wardrobe. Anna Johnson has taken the first step in the spring clean - assessing what trends should stay and which should go in the final quarter of 2008.
WHAT'S NOT: SECURITY BLANKET NOMAD SCARFS
It is hard to abandon a trend when it feels so good, looks so good and is cheap and easy...BUT the big fat scrunched up rolly cotton Yassar Arafat meets Nicole Ritchie scarf moment is a bubble that's gotta burst.
In fashion since about 1977 when communist students in Italy wore Palestinian neck wraps to get up in the establishments nose, I now see the exact same model, made in China and not Gaza, for sale on Canal Street in downtown Chinatown, New York City. And let me tell you, once a trend has hit Canal Street it's time to rethink.
So what does a girl do when her big scary Muppet show scarf collection has become an emotional addiction? Take a good long hard look at the sisters Olsen and ask yourself if you need that much cushioning and concealment in public.
If you have a serious attachment then best to approach your scarf purge in steps over seven days. Day one: replace with broad silk man's tie and waistcoat. Day two: a vintage lace collar. Day three: a silk Plisse scarf from Hermes twisted like a necklace or choker. Day four: a vintage cravat. Day five: a large triangle of Liberty print floral cotton. Day six: a pinky hand crocheted mohair scarf long and loopy in a techno bright yarn. Day seven: OK you can wear your best friend again, but in a bright colour or floral print for spring.
WHAT'S HOT: THE BIG BAG (AGAIN)
Just when we thought spring bags couldn't get any bigger, they got MUCH bigger. So thank goodness they have also gotten softer and more whimsical and more wearable along the way. Prada's big idea is to do a bag in lace. Gucci's got juicy patterns and patent leather. Burberry's gone smooshy with soft skins in gold and Chanel's fluorescent lemon yellow top handled bag that looks like a giant dim sum indicate a design trend toward an investment bag that is not over encrusted, deadly serious or a dead weight to carry around.
Mimco mastered the great big bag with witty features several season's ago by always including customized hardware, funny unlikely pockets and sexy textures. Such sass and attitude is what you need from a spring bag if it is going to dominate a third of your body (and potentially a third of your rent as well!!).
Choose a bag that is that much bolder than the rest of your clothes in a solid bright, luxe sexy texture liked cracked metallic or featuring something really smart like lots of outside pockets.
Also deliberately mismatch the shoes and dress just a little down for a big deal BIG bag. This is the trick of Kate Moss, who always looks like someone ran from out of the shadows offering her a brand new IT bag to clash with her faded grey skinny's. In her case they probably did, in yours only wear a new IT bag for day. The sight of a girl in a cocktail dress sporting a big leather beast with heavy buckles or sporty zips is so incongruous. No, no darling - that's what cheap and cheerful little clutches are for.
