Yves Saint Laurent, the legendary French designer whose ground breaking designs were as influential in 20th century as those by Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, has died aged 71 in Paris.

Originally hired by Christian Dior in the 1950's as a teenager, Saint Laurent launched his couture label in 1962. He is seen as being responsible for developing the way women dress in the modern age with some key looks seen on his runways including the tuxedo pant suit, safari jackets, peacoats and dramatic artistic prints.

Some celebrities who were known to frequent Yves Saint Laurent designs are actresses Catherine Deneuve and Lauren Bacall, Paloma Picasson and famed fashion journalist Nan Kempner.

The Yves Saint Laurent brand has also launched several extremely successful perfumes including YSL, Rive Gauche, Opium and Paris.  Similarly Yves Saint Laurent branded accessories including footwear, handbags and sunglasses are seen as a true fashion status symbol globally.

Saint Laurent retired in 2002, at the 40th anniversary of his couture house, with the label now designed by Stefano Pilati.

Survived by his mother and two younger sisters, What's What pays tribute to this man of incredible style, vision and talent.
